A Healthy Dose of CBD
How much CBD should you give your dog?
With CBD being relatively new to the market there can be a lot of misleading information out there. One of the things that often gets confused is the amount of CBD you can safely give your pet. Although taking too much CBD typically won’t hurt your pet knowing how much to give them to fit their individual needs is always the best approach.
Below you will read about the amount of CBD to give your pet based on weight, energy-level, and level of discomfort.
What is CBD?
CBD is a natural component known as cannabidiol found in the cannabis plant. CBD binds perfectly with your dog’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) which is responsible for things like mood and pain regulation.
This means that CBD could possibly provide your pet with a range of benefits like pain relief, anxiety reduction, and arthritis. All of these factors should be considered when finding out how much CBD to give your pet.
Weight a Second
The biggest factor in determining the appropriate dose for your pet is size. Typically it goes 1-3 mg of CBD per 10 pounds of body weight. So a 20-pound dog would take around 4-6 mg of CBD. Typically, this would be a great dose for pets who are showing minimum symptoms (anxiety, pain, high-energy).
Always consult your veterinarian for any credible medical advice relating to the individual needs of your pet.
The Symptoms
This is another factor to consider when determining the proper dose amount. You must look at how severe your puppies problems are. Here is an example. Take the two same-sized dogs:
Moose: (Pit Bull/Lab mix)
Weighs about 80 pounds and is very high-energy. Moose has severe separation anxiety and will cry out when we leave for an extended period of time. He also has a very hard time sleeping and often yelps and jumps out of dead sleep. At that weight with those symptoms, we give him about 30 mg of CBD in the morning and 15 mg of CBD before he goes to bed.
Sadie (German Shepard):
Weighs about 75 pounds and gets really excited when company is here. She doesn’t struggle too much with anxiety, but she does fuss a little bit when we leave. Sadie doesn’t require a lot of CBD but we know that she moves around a lot and is very agile for her size. We give her about 20 mg of CBD in the morning to promote joint health.
Conclusion
There are a lot of factors that go into determining the amount of CBD to give to your pet. The two main ones are weight/size and severity of symptoms. It’s always a good thing to start off at a low dose (1mg per 10 pounds of body weight) and then increase based on how severe the symptoms are.
Overall 1 mg of CBD is a great place to start, but trying 3 mg per 10 pounds of body weight can work great for older dogs with a range of problems. Be sure to contact your veterinarian for any credible medical advice. How much CBD do you typically use for your pet? Drop a comment below!
